ochlea Distillery is built in one of Lochlea Farm's buildings. A true "Farm distillery", then, where the grains come from its own land, the barley is malted on the malting floor in its own barns, and the resulting "wort" is eventually fired into spirit 2 doors down in its own boilers. And, of course, the casks lie in the farm's own warehouses waiting for the whisky to mature to be bottled. And all on the farm where Robert Burns grew up long ago.
In 2021, John Campbell became the new Distillery Manager. Prior to this, John had worked at Laphroaig on Islay for 27 years, the last 16 of which as final distillery manager. So he could know what effect former Laphroaig casks would have on the maturation of the Lochlea spirit. And that this worked well we can now all taste for ourselves.
The number of available bottles of this edition is also very limited. A warming and smoky version of Lochlea single malt due to the use of ex-Islay barrels and peated quarter casks. The color of the label reflects the icy winters on the plains of Ayrshire.
TASTING NOTES:
Nose: stewed fruit with pear tart, Chanel No 5, pickled grass, and just-sawn oak. Over that, light peat smoke for warming.
Taste: old-fashioned fruit acidity with apple pie and toasted nuts. On the tongue, too, there are light peat influences in every nook and cranny.
Finish: deliciously fruity, nutty and warming, with a veil of Islay
