A world famous classical and exotic cocktail with the refreshing taste of fresh mint with Caribbean rum, sugar and lime juice.
The name Mojito comes from the African word mojo which means ‘to place a little spell’, although the Mojito’s origins are Cuban not African.
The story of Cuba’s oldest cocktail dates back surprisingly to the mid 1580’s on board Francis Drake’s pirate ship where the crew doctor administered aguardiente, the fore runner of today’s rum, mixed with sugar, lime and mint as a medicinal cocktail. But it was not until the 1800’s with the growing popularity of rum which eventually replaced the aguardiente that the Mojito was born.
Despite its popularity among pirates, the Mojito was made famous in modern times due to American writer Ernest Hemingway who is known to have been a big fan and drank them at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana as well as in Key West, Florida.
